Dirtybird

Dirtybird was founded in san francisco in january 2005 by Claude VonStroke (Barclay Crenshaw), sole credited founder across every source we checked. its first release, DB001, wasn't VonStroke's own music, it was Justin Martin & Sammy D's "The Southern Draw EP." VonStroke's own term for the label's sound is "tech funk," a grittier, bumpier alternative to the minimal-techno sound dominant in san francisco at the time. on the label's identity: "we have a vibe, it's not a big barrier between the artists and the fans at our shows. no one is untouchable."

VonStroke doesn't own Dirtybird anymore. EMPIRE (Empire Distribution) acquired the label outright on 20 october 2022, VonStroke retained an A&R and creative role at the time of the sale, then stepped back fully as CEO in 2023, per the label's own Discogs profile. in 2026 he's been discussing the exit publicly while promoting a new, separate label, Wrong Number Records, calling Dirtybird by then "no longer aligned with my core values." the label's current site copy lists it as based in los angeles, a shift from the san francisco identity it built its name on.

17 artists we track have released on it, listed below, the touring side is still active, Dirtybird Campout runs as a co-branded event with Northern Nights, and a weekly Dirtybird Radio podcast is still posting on the label's own soundcloud. the earlier "Dirtybird BBQ" compilation series appears to have stopped after 2018, we found nothing under that name since.
