brothers Mark Knight and Stuart Knight started Toolroom in Maidstone, Kent, in a tool shed in the yard of a house according to Billboard, or their parents' shed according to DJ Mag. Mark is the creative half, Stuart the business half. the label's own about page, Billboard, DJ Mag and Resident Advisor all say 2003. Discogs says 2002, and the first 12", Audio Drive's "I Feel Good" (TOOL001), carries a 2002 copyright line, so the shed was busy before the first commercial release. Beatportal alone adds their father as a third founder. the name has drifted as well. older store listings read "Toolroom Records", the Beatport label page and new releases since around 2019 read plain "Toolroom", the ℗ line on current releases says "Toolroom Productions Ltd", and the website still titles itself Toolroom Records. we go with the store name.

the label's own line is that it is "an international House music record label and worldwide events brand", and its about page says it became "synonymous with credible House and Tech House". Mark Knight writes there that they "wanted to be a record label run by DJs, for DJs". Billboard's 20th anniversary piece in 2023 credited it with championing tech house from the start, counted 22 staff and a 15-artist roster, and reported Beatport ranking it the number two house label of all time. the catalogue behind that: Mark Knight & Funkagenda "Man With The Red Face" (2007) is the record the label itself names as defining, Tiësto and Mark Knight's "Beautiful World" came in 2012, Technasia and Green Velvet's "Suga" (2015) was, per DJ Mag, the longest running Beatport number one, and Weiss "Feel My Needs" (2019) passed 250 million streams and UK gold according to the same piece, figures we have not checked against the BPI. a 2014 rebrand the label called #RESET cut the roster down and, in staff member Miles Shackleton's words to DJ Mag, was "a tightening of our musical vision, really focusing on house, tech-house and techno".

there is a family of imprints under the parent company Toolroom Productions Ltd. Toolroom Trax is the DJ tools arm, "solid, underground, groovy Tech House and Techno" in its own words, and it has had two lives: a TRT catalogue from 2003 to 2014, then a relaunch as TRX in 2014, which is the only date RA gives for it. Toolroom Longplayer handled albums from 2008 to 2011 plus a few 2015 compilations, and we found nothing after that, so whether it still exists is unconfirmed. Toolroom Knights was a run of guest-mixed compilations from 2010 to 2014, and Leaders Of The New School, the newcomer showcase, now comes out through Trax. Toolroom Academy is the production school, launched in 2015 per Beatportal or 2016 per Billboard, which Stuart Knight told DJ Mag grew out of the demo pile, "which at one point was around 500 to 600 a week". then there is Toolroom Radio, the weekly show. the about page says it is hosted by Mark Knight, but the 2026 episodes on SoundCloud, around EP857 to EP860, are fronted by ESSEL, Danny Rhys and Illyus Barrientos, and the label's own website archive stops at EP792 from May 2025, so the site is behind its own feeds. on top of that sit the compilation series (Toolroom Ibiza, Toolroom Miami, Best Of Toolroom, This Is Toolroom and the vinyl Toolroom Sampler) and the Toolroom Trax guest mixes on the Trax SoundCloud. the events side is real too: the Where Music Matters World Tour lands at Fabric, London on 24 October 2026 with Mark Knight, Mousse T., Michael Gray, Junior Jack and David Penn. Matt Smallwood ran A&R and the label from October 2014 to January 2025 before leaving for Club Class Music Management. we could not find who replaced him.

Discogs lists 1,423 entries under Toolroom Records, so what follows is a floor, not a census. a few notes on the names. Chris Lake is here on the strength of the 2010 "Toolroom Knights" mix compilation he fronted with Tocadisco, not an original single. GUZ is in for "Come Back" with Havoc & Lawn from 2021. a second pass through Deezer's label field added Mousse T., Niko The Kid, Novak, Patrick Topping, RUZE and Tiga, the last two on the 2014 compilation "Ibiza Underground 2014".
