Sweat It Out

Sweat It Out is a Sydney record label and, by its own account, "started by the late and great AJAX". Ajax was Adrian Thomas, a DJ and producer from the Bang Gang collective, who died in Melbourne in February 2013 after being hit by a truck. who else was in the room at the start depends on who you ask. the label's own copy names only Ajax. Mixmag in 2021 wrote that director Jamie Raeburn founded it in 2008 with Ajax and Matt Handley of Yolanda Be Cool. The Music Network, twice in October 2021, said it was founded in 2010 by Ajax, Handley and Raeburn. the year is the bigger problem, because the catalogue says 2008: SWEAT001, the Gameboy/Gamegirl EP "The Golden Ghetto Sex", and SWEATDS001 dated April 2008 both sit on Discogs, and the tenth anniversary vinyl in 2018 was titled "Sweat It Out 2008 - 2018". so we go with 2008 as the release-backed date and flag the 2010 claim as the odd one out. Raeburn runs it today, CEO in 2021 and managing director by 2026, and he also heads Central Station Records, a sister company the label has shared staff with since an October 2021 restructure while both are described as run independently.

what it puts out is broad. Josh Kellett, general manager in 2018, said the label started as more of a dance and electronic label and then branched out across genres, and with no genre statement from the label and no tags visible on its Beatport page, we leave the genre tag off. the discography backs the breadth: Yolanda Be Cool and DCUP "We No Speak Americano" in 2010, What So Not's debut "7 Dollar Bill" in 2011 (a fresh-faced Flume was in the duo, per Mixmag), and RÜFÜS DU SOL's first two albums, "Atlas" in 2013 and "Bloom" in 2016, with "Solace" following in 2018. Dom Dolla and Go Freek's "Define" topped the ARIA club chart for nine weeks in 2015, Dom Dolla's "San Frandisco" won Best Dance Release at the 2020 ARIA Awards, Purple Disco Machine's "Soulmatic" album came out here in 2017, and Luude's Colin Hay collaboration "Down Under" reached number 32 on the UK singles chart in January 2022. Mixmag's take is that Sweat It Out picked up where Modular left off. the first international signing, per The Music Network, was Monkey Safari.

the imprint family takes some untangling. Club Sweat is filed on Discogs as a sub-label of Sweat It Out, described on its Resident Advisor page as a "subsidiary label of Sweat It Out", and called "our sister label" in the label's own copy. it began as a compilation series on Sweat It Out in 2010 and got its own CLUBSWE catalogue in 2013, with Danny T as its head. the site also lists Love CLVB and a distribution arm called Get It Out, and a publishing wing, Sweat It Out Publishing, launched in February 2021 with Kobalt. the name itself has moved: the (P) lines read "Sweat It Out!" with an exclamation mark from 2015 to 2022 and plain "Sweat It Out" from 2023 on, which is why Discogs and RA still file it under the older spelling. distribution shifted too, Warner Music Australia on the (P) lines through 2023 and Sony or Columbia licensing on the recent Purple Disco Machine records. a Traxsource bio claims a 2012 nomination for best Australian indie label, which we could not confirm anywhere else.

there is no mix series or podcast, but the writing camps are the recurring thing now: a first writers camp in 2021 with Dom Dolla and Crooked Colours among the participants, a Spotify EQUAL camp in Sydney in February 2025 directed by KLP, a Melbourne camp in May 2025, plus a 2026 Melbourne camp and a first Amsterdam camp that we have only seen as headlines. remixers on Sweat It Out releases count on this site, and a good chunk of the names below got in that way, on records like "Sundream", "Strangers", "Pump The Brakes" and "Candy". Jamie Jones and Jazzy's "We Groovin" is a Helix Records record licensed to Sweat It Out with a SWEAT catalogue number, and Kyle Watson's "I Got You" remixes came in under licence from This Ain't Bristol. Motez has a run of originals here from "Promise Me" in 2014 onward but no page on this site yet.
