Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight, who record on their own as Catacombkid and BeachesBeaches, met freshman year at western washington university in bellingham, knight on physics and math, mills on graphic design. they formed odesza in 2012 and self-released the debut, Summer's Gone, that september, right as they were finishing school.
the live show is the thing. across In Return in 2014, A Moment Apart in 2017 and The Last Goodbye in 2022, they built the set into a full-band audio-visual production, live drumline and all, closer to a concert than a dj booth. a moment apart earned a grammy nomination for best dance/electronic album, and the last goodbye, their fourth studio album, got them a second in the same category.

in 2015 they started Foreign Family Collective, a label and visual-art platform they still run, home to releases from across the electronic world. in august 2025 they filmed The Finale at the gorge in washington, the closing statement on the last goodbye era, and it is the full set up top.
